Lupita ran the shop under the scaffold and kept the whole project alive with coffee and opinions. Halfway through, I asked to paint her. She laughed and said only if I made her taller.
So I did. She stands three storeys now, arms crossed, watching her own street the way she watched it every day for thirty years.
The best murals are portraits of the people who were there while you painted them. Lupita is the proof.
